Tips for Healthy Holiday Skin

by | Dec 7, 2021 | Healthy Skin

The holidays are such a fun time of the year — visiting with friends and family, eating delicious food, and spreading so much cheer. However, the holiday season comes with cold weather and stress, too, which impact the skin. Common holiday skin issues are dryness, redness, and irritation. To help combat those issues, here’s a list of our favorite holiday skin care tips!

Continue Wearing Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the last thing you probably think about when heading outside into the cold and as the days continue to shorten. But, it is something you should work into your everyday routine. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the snow can reflect a lot of light, in fact, as much as 80% of the rays coming off of the sun are reflected at you when those rays hit the snow. If you forget your sunscreen, not only can you get a sunburn, but you can also damage your skin and cause age spots or skin cancer.

Choose the Right Make-Up

With the holidays coming up, there’s a good possibility that you’ll be wearing make-up more regularly. If you have sensitive skin, choosing the right skincare products may seem a little daunting. Here are some things that you should consider before buying/applying make-up: Look for makeup that is non-comedogenic, meaning that it won’t clog your pores. Find a breathable, lightweight foundation. And lastly, always, always, always remove your make-up before going to sleep!

Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Your skin needs to be moisturized in order to stay healthy. Unlike the summer, the winter months dry out your skin, so you’ll need to be extra cognizant about keeping your skin hydrated. Applying a moisturizer in the morning and at night and right after you get out of the shower will help lock the moisture in. When choosing a moisturizer or cleanser, steer clear of products with fragrances that have alcohol as the base of the fragrance. Alcohol is known for its drying effects.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

It can be tempting to always reach for the sugary treats and drinks during the holidays. Nutrition is a vital way of making sure that your skin stays healthy during the coldest months of the year.  Along with drinking plenty of water, eat foods that will also keep you healthy. Choose foods that are rich in Omega 3s and vitamins like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Limit Your Stress

A new level of stress can be added when the holiday season rolls around — from planning, traveling, or last-minute shopping. While some stress is unavoidable, it’s important to find healthy ways to relax and unwind because stress is a huge contributor to wrinkles and acne. If you find yourself constantly stressed, block off time every week to do something that you like — maybe like a self care skin care treatment!
